COVID-19 Aftermath

In the last 8 -14 weeks, the COVID-19 pandemic has been an eye-opener for governments, organisations, businesses, and individuals all over the world. It has exposed vulnerabilities in our healthcare systems, global leadership, and also re-echoed the value of certain organisations like the World Health Organisation.

The lockdown period has certainly been insightful in helping both public and private institutions re-align or re-strategize their core objectives of reaching and serving their citizens or customers in more efficient ways, that in case this kind of pandemic happens to re-surface, businesses and people’s lives would still continue as normal or at least have a week or so of lockdown.

For governments in developing countries, investing in projects like good infrastructure and roads network that enable efficient delivery of goods, and country-wide fiber installations that would enable good internet speeds for both customers and business owners would be beneficial. These would keep essential services accessible like banking, electronic diagnostic testing, etc - readily available. Most importantly, ensuring that healthcare systems are built to rapidly respond to such pandemics effectively and efficiently.

Here in Rwanda, public-private partnerships that brought about projects like irembo.gov have certainly been very valuable in terms of providing certain online services to people during the pandemic. Not forgetting online banking that has greatly improved over time here in Kigali. This and other government initiatives clearly show the right direction being taken.

On a business level, most companies have learned lessons on how their businesses might need to change and adapt to future work methodologies, like working remotely, managing distributed teams, having software systems in place that enable the former two. A lesson for many is the unprecedented value in having the ability to still deliver services or products online. If anything, current online businesses and delivery services like hehe mart have definitely stayed the course and provided value to customers even in periods such as this pandemic.

For businesses or institutions that did not have the necessary capabilities to still provide value to their customers or citizens, now would be a great time to invest in the future. There’s great anticipation that many businesses and or institutions will start looking for software solutions either custom-built or with 3rd party systems that would enable their businesses to continuously deliver services or products to their customers
